Reformer Pilates 101

Reformer Pilates 101

Whether you're a fitness novice or a fitness expert, you would likely benefit from Pilates. This amazing series of functional movements is ideal for everyone from supermodels to those who have sustained bodily injuries. Curious about Pilates and how it can help you? Keep reading below!

What are Pilates?
Pilates is a series of functional movements designed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s to rehabilitate soldiers. It was originally called "Contrology" because of the control and body awareness necessary to complete the actions. Pilates was intended and is still used to increase balance, mobility, and strength for people in all walks of life.

Benefits of Pilates
Pilates has numerous benefits beyond increased strength, mobility, and balance! It has even been shown to aid in stress management and relaxation!
Other benefits include:
  • Rehabilitation of joint and spinal injuries
  • Strengthening of core
  • Increased flexibility
  • Back pain relief
  • Spine stabilization
  • Improved posture
  • Regulation of muscular imbalances
  • Prevention for musculoskeletal injuries
  • Increased lung capacity and circulation
  • Increased concentration
  • Increased body awareness

What is Reformer?
You may see some studios offer Reformer classes (as do we at Wellness Professionals!). This refers to a Reformer machine. The Reformer is a system of springs and pulleys that can increase or decrease resistance with movements. This allows for Pilates classes to be made custom to the needs of the individual and can uplift you to the fullest potential of your abilities. Reformer is frequently used in modern day Pilates classes to cater to more individuals.

Mat vs. Reformer
If you're familiar with Pilates, you may have done Mat Pilates! Mat classes use similar, if not the same, sequences as Reformer Pilates. Mat Pilates uses body weight on a mat; whereas, Reformer uses the system of pulleys and springs to increase or decrease resistance. Many people prefer Reformer classes if going into a studio because of the customizability.

What can I expect from a class at Wellness Professionals?
At Wellness Professionals we offer Reformer Pilates. Class sizes are limited to three people to allow for one-on-one instruction. We also do individual sessions. Our classes work through the typical Pilates sequences with adjustments made for your needs. Come prepared in comfortable clothing and socks. Water is recommended!
